Melatonin is banned in certain European countries and Canada ostensibly due to concerns about the spread of viruses through animal products, according to the Society for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms. This is because the melatonin sold in those countries was obtained from cow pineal glands, unlike the synthetic variety found in the United States. One wonders why they don't just make synthetic melatonin in Canada and across the pond, but that is a matter of speculation for another time.
